How will you make an impact?
BioProcess Research Engineer - Advanced Technology, R&D will be responsible for research, design, and testing of new technologies for improving the production of large biologic molecule and cell based therapies. Identify or create viable new technologies, prove feasibility and conceptualize the implementation into biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Understand upstream and downstream biopharmaceutical workflow methods and develop new single-use products that will improve process efficiency, ease of use, and economies of scale. The ideal candidate will be able to rapidly integrate novel technologies into single use products and workflows for biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
What will you do?
Drive product innovation through adaption of novel and existing technology - innovate via conceptualization, research, design, and evaluation
Propose new paths of technology research and vet these concepts with sound experimental design, understanding of core principles, and product development feasibility
Independently design experimental plans, perform studies, and analyze and report study results and recommendations both verbally and in written formats.
Perform engineering analysis and modeling (i.e. heat and mass transfer, CFD, surface chemistry, biological networks etc.) of components and systems.
Leverage expertise in the fields of biochemistry, physics, materials science, and chemical engineering - use these tools for technology conceptualization and research
Supports technology transfer into development
Oversees and assists in process characterization and process validation studies as needed (in-house or externally).
Supports troubleshooting and continuous process/product improvements as necessary
Document experimental results/concepts to support patent and intellectual property portfolio
Compile findings into documents ready for publication in academic or trade journals
Interface and provide consultation for engineering, quality, manufacturing, purchasing, marketing and sales groups as necessary to support transition of technologies into product development
Interact with customers on new product and process concepts including alpha and beta testing
Travel as required to perform job functions.
How will you get here?
Bachelor's of Science degree or PhD. Preferred in Engineering - biological, biomedical, bioprocessing, biotechnology, chemical or materials.
Minimum of 5 years of work experience.
Ability to deconstruct technology concepts into core principles and determine feasibility for product development
Experience and/or aptitude in specifying, designing, and qualifying small and large scale bioprocess unit operations (mixing, filtration, cell culture, bioreactors, centrifugation, TFF/MF/UF, chromatography, purification, clonal development)
Experience in the medical device or biopharmaceutical industries.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of biocompatibility and material selection for the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.
Software proficiency: MS office programs, SAS/JMP, DoE, matlab/simulink, CAD (Solid works, AutoCAD a plus)
Polymer processing knowledge for the following is helpful: injection molding, extrusion, blow/cast films, solvent cast membranes and plastic welding
Strong knowledge of cell biology and/or biochemistry, especially with respect to interaction with biopharmaceutical processes and process equipment
Engineering research, design, modeling and analysis. Proficient in good engineering practices, statistics, and applied mathematics.
Knowledge of bioprocessing operations (cell culture, microbial fermentation, harvest & recovery) and cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices) type environments.
