Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems is currently seeking Project Engineers for our Navy Fleet ballistic Missile (D5) Program in our Propulsion Systems Business Unit at our Bacchus (Magna), UT campus.

Role Description & Responsibilities:

The D5 Project Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the technical execution in the ongoing production and use of rocket motor components including: insulated chambers, loaded chambers and rocket motor assemblies. This role will report to the Strategic Programs Engineering Director.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as final design authority for the D5 product lines components and assemblies

  • Supports production operations

  • Detail-oriented

  • Self-starter

  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity

  • MRB member/participant

  • Change owner/champion for new or revised drawings and specifications

  • Familiar with GD&T, drafting and modeling principles, technical writing

  • 75% Clearfield/25% Magna for insulated chambers

  • 100% Magna for loaded chambers and rocket motor assemblies

  • Daily interaction with prime contractor and government customer representatives

  • Member of matrixed operations organization (VSET)

  • Prepare test plans and manage execution

  • Prepare technical reports and presentations

  • Drive technical excellence (by upholding technical standards for project, managing technical risks, supporting cost goals, and ensuring requirements compliance)

  • Skills & Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years in solid rocket motor design and manufacture experience.

  • Strong understanding of solid rocket motor system design, development, and manufacture

  • Demonstrated experience with problem solving, problem investigation teams and critical decision making skills

  • Strong understanding and broad application of PS engineering systems (engineering standards, configuration management, material review board, process control, tooling, facilities, software, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience in generating technical solutions in the absence of complete customer requirements

  • Management of engineering scope as it pertains to budgeting and participation in EAC reviews

  • Strong sense of urgency and work ethic in ensuring engineering meets customer and program expectations in a timely and efficient manner

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated experience with high value customer presentations

  • Demonstrated team leadership skills - leader of significant technical projects or investigations and management of multiple program tasks to schedule and budget Experience with the proposal process

  • Ability to qualify for DOD secret clearance

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • An understanding of program management practices: establishing and executing to budgets and schedules.

  • Ability to travel: Travel expectation of 5% - 10%

Qualifications:

Education/Certifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering or related field required and 9 years of work experience

  • MS degree in engineering or related field with 7 years experience

  • Must be able to obtain a Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS degree in engineering or related field with 7 years experience

  • PhD degree in engineering or related field with 4 years experience

  • 5 years experience with solid rocket motors
