Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Specialty Engineer Manager. This position will be located in Ogden, UT and will support the Ground Subsystems Support Contract (GSSC) program. This position will manage Nuclear Hardness, Nuclear Surety, and System Safety engineering teams in support for the Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) weapon system and other nuclear weapon systems under development by the Air Force. The team conducts safety and nuclear surety evaluations of the design, operation, and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, propulsion, transportation & handling, nuclear command & control, software, and communications subsystems. The team also provides technical support to the AF ICBM System Program Office System Safety Lead and Nuclear Certification Manager. This is a dual role encompassing both people leadership and technical performance.

What you'll get to do:

  • Manage and provide technical leadership/oversight for a team of 10 - 12 engineers supporting sustainment and modernization of the Air Force ICBM fleet

  • People leadership for an engineering organization, to include performance management, career development, staffing, and merit planning

  • Provide project and technical oversight for nuclear hardness, nuclear surety, and safety activities performed by the group

  • Provide ownership of and direction to the nuclear hardness, nuclear surety, and safety processes used in the group

  • Support department initiatives, recruiting, technology roadmap creation, cross-campus/sector involvement, and NCTA project leadership

  • Task management, external and internal customer interface, budget planning and management, team engagement activities, and staff performance and goal evaluation, team technical work product review and feedback, and team recruiting/hiring support

  • Staffing and workload forecast; employee inclusion, engagement, mentoring and career development; employee training and identification and training of skills required to execute on programs (recruiting, sourcing, onboarding, performance management and contract maintenance for the contractors working in the business area)

  • Demonstrate a commitment to ethics and integrity, and the capability to innovate while challenging traditional ways of doing business

This position may have a 9/80 work schedule available. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.




You'll bring these qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline

  • A minimum 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years with a Master's degree

  • Experience with DoD and AF Nuclear Surety policy and processes

  • Experience with DoD, and AF System Safety standards and processes

  • Experience in nuclear hardness, or mechanical/electrical testing and analysis, or related field

  • A minimum of 1 year providing technical leadership of an engineering team

  • U.S. Citizenship and an active Secret Security Clearance or higher

These qualifications would be nice to have:

  • Active Top Secret Security Clearance

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering

  • 3+ years providing technical and people leadership

  • 5+ years' experience in ICBM nuclear hardness, nuclear surety, or safety

  • ICBM work experience, particularly related to ICBM design, operations, requirements, maintenance, security, test & evaluation

  • Experience with Mil-Std-882E analyses, including System Hazard Analysis, Operating & Support Hazard Analysis,

  • System-of-systems Hazard Analysis, Environmental Hazard Analysis, Hazard Log implementation and support, and software safety analysis

  • Experience with AFSPCMAN 91-710 Range Safety Policies and Procedures

  • Experience with Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)

  • Excellent technical writing skills

  • Good verbal and interpersonal skills required to work closely with teammates, stakeholders (Air Force Safety Center, Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, National Security Agency, etc.) and other external customers
