Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking Propulsion Engineering Manager/ SMT to lead an experienced team of mechanical engineers in the design, analysis, manufacture and test of Post boost missile propulsion systems. This position will be permanently located in Roy, Utah with some travel to El Segundo, California. Learn more about the GBSD program here.
Supervisory or management responsibilities in research and/or product development for post boost propulsion team
Senior Propulsion Engineer in charge of managing propulsion team consisting of 10-15 engineers and a Subcontract with major supplier valued at over $200M
Manages a function within the larger organizational unit, setting & operating to objectives & providing guidance to subordinates based on goals, objectives & company policy
Manager responsibilities include:
Planning, risk management, and project performance addressing cost, schedule, and technical quality for related Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) elements on a large system development-type contract or full responsibility for all aspects of program performance on a large technical services-type contract
Regularly requires analysis of alternative courses of action. Decisions have risk/reward implications for program or area of influence
Advisor to lower level propulsion lead and exempt employees. Helps meet established schedules or resolve technical or operational problems. Typically accomplishes results through lower level(s) of mgmt or exempt employees
Establish operating procedures that affect organizational unit(s). Interprets, executes, and recommends modifications to organizational policies. Establishes operating policies and procedures that affect subordinate organizational units
Develop and administer budgets and standards of performance
Lead a team in Developing Post Boost Propulsion System architecture, System and component level analyses of complex fluid thermal systems, Component engineering and testing, Component and propulsion system manufacturing and test, Propulsion flight operations
Supporting testing and flight operations as well as authoring procedures and other engineering instructions for test or operating engineers or customer use
Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations
Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long- term perspective, for desired results
Research, analysis, system design and development of missile propulsion systems and flight hardware procurement and technical oversight with suppliers and interfacing with customers (SMT).
The SMT lead has ultimate responsibility, authority and accountability for the success of the subcontract
Conducts subcontractor technical performance tracking to insure proper visibility, insight, control, and management of subcontractor activities
Defines technical requirements and performs technical verification
Generates SSOW Technical Content and conducts peer review with Program Team, Engineering Functional Management, and GSC Functional Management
Conducts peer review of Technical Procurement Package with Program Team and Engineering Functional Management
Ensures review and approval of Subcontractor's technical SDRLs by Subject Matter Expert

This position's standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
Bachelor's of Science degree and 7 years of engineering experience; OR 5 years of engineering experience with a Master's degree
3 years of Engineering management experience
Active Secret clearance.
Experience in fluid mechanics, compressible flow and/or thermodynamics of propulsion systems.
Experience with industry standard fluid/ thermal and/or mechanical analysis software, design standards and/or documentation related to propulsion system or subsystem design.
Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS) principles and application
Knowledge of configuration management best practices, scheduling, and cost estimation
Current or active Top Secret/SCI clearance or higher highly preferred
Masters Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
Experience leading spacecraft propulsion testing
Experience leading hardware procurement/supply chain operations
Experience with overseeing subcontracts for performance and accountability
Possesses strong leadership qualities, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to deal with ambiguity and meet program commitments in a highly concurrent engineering environment
