Salt Lake City Corporation ENGINEERING INTERN (PAID) SEASONAL in Salt Lake City, Utah
This intern position is with Salt Lake City Engineering’s right-of-way projects group that focuses on design and construction administration of projects within the City’s right-of-way that includes roadways, sidewalks, curb and gutter. Typical tasks include support to project managers, designers, or inspectors during the construction season. This internship comes with the opportunity learn and perform a wide range of project activities.
The position is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit. To qualify students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period. Incumbents may deal with confidential information, which is expected to be maintained as confidential and shared only on a need to know basis with city employees and elsewhere when authorized by the intern’s City supervisor.
Construction inspections of City contracted work or permitted work with the right-of-way. Determines compliance with plans and specifications.Approves and/or rejects contractors work. May oversee materials testing.
Prepares reports of work done, daily logs, and project status. Meets periodically with division staff to outline project status or report on project problems.
Calculatesproject pricing and payment amounts to be made to contractors.
Reviews survey data and helps develop project plans.
Applies standard, accepted engineering principles and best practices.
Other tasks as assigned.
Complies with city and department policies and procedures.
A Civil Engineering student who will complete either BS or MS from an ABET accredited university in the next 18 months
Possess a valid driver’s license
Comfortable interacting with contractors and the general public
Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Excel, Word, and/or GIS
Demonstrated community service, participation in professional or student groups
Strong communication skills
