The Senior Environmental Engineer helps to ensure Maverik follows all current Federal, State, and local environmental regulatory requirements. This includes conducting items such as site assessments, emergency response investigations, soil and groundwater contamination investigations and spill response plan evaluations. The Senior Environmental Engineer will work closely with the Director of Environmental Services to streamline processes and prepare corrective action plans and remediation plans as needed.

What You’ll do as a Sr Environmental Engineer:

  • Support Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment and Real Estate Transactions

  • Participate in emergency responses to surface spills and subsurface leaks from Maverik underground storage tanks (UST) or fuel trucks

  • Conduct surface and subsurface investigations of soil and groundwater contamination

  • Prepare corrective action plans for remediation of fuel hydrocarbon

  • Perform groundwater flow, contaminant fate pilot testing, installation oversight, and O&M of remediation systems testing

  • Design/install monitoring, injection/extraction, and air sparging/soil vapor extraction wells

  • Design and implement a wide variety of vapor, soil, and groundwater remediation systems as well as helping with installation of new USTs and removal of old USTs

  • Streamline permitting process for air quality permitting for new stores and renewal

  • Implement a company-wide spill prevention and spill response plan

  • Travel to and conduct field work (up to 50% or more, if needed) at Maverik stores and projects in the intermountain west and beyond. A satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is required for this role

  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

You’ll be a Great Fit if You Have:

  • A Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in engineering or natural science is preferred or equivalent experience

  • 8+ years of environmental site assessments, remediation design and implementation, and environmental compliance required

  • Professional licensing and certification: Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent, UST Consultant or equivalent, Soil and Groundwater Sampler, 40-Hour initial HAZWOPER training and 8-Hour Annual Refreshers, and Standard First Aid and Safety/Community CPR training

  • A working knowledge of air quality permitting process in states within Maverik’s footprint

  • Experience designing, manufacturing, and operation and maintenance of portable and fixed-in-place vapor, soil, and groundwater remediation systems

  • Strong proficiency with sophisticated computer models for hydrogeological investigation, environmental risk assessment, fate and transport of groundwater contamination, and air quality

  • Strong working knowledge of risk assessments and natural attenuation protocols as alternative means of site closure in lieu of active remediation

  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of petroleum organic chemistry, toxicity, and health and safety hazards associated with short- and long-term exposures to employees, customers, and visitors at Maverik sites
